About the organisation


He became editor of the Financial Times in 1991 and during his 10 years in this role launched the US version of the newspaper.


A member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee from spring 2003 until spring 2006.


Director-General of the CBI since July 2006. He will be stepping-down in 2011.


He became Chancellor of the University of Warwick in August 2008.

He is married to Harriet Murray-Browne and has two children.


Although the CBI is strictly apolitical, Lambert was known as a Labour supporter: he was the first editor of the FT to back Labour in an election. Last year he performed a surprising reversal, swinging the CBI's weight behind the key Tory proposal of swift deficit reduction.


He chaired the Lambert Review on the relationship between higher education and business.

The Confederation of British Industry is known as the ‘Voice of Business’. It promotes the interests of its members, some 200,000 British businesses, a figure which includes some 80% of FTSE 100 companies and around 50% of FTSE 350 companies.
