Toumaz Holding Company including Toumaz Technology Ltd and Eurasian Natural Resources Company (ENRC) was established to build a portfolio of investments in the nanotechnology sector and its main country of operation is Switzerland.
In March 2006 his salary became the centre of attention amongst Imperial College staff and students after the students' union newspaper, FELIX, published a front-page article highlighting how much he was paid. Sir Richard received a salary £305,000 a year, the second highest among university principals.
At the centre of a storm surrounding ENRC's controversial purchase of disputed mining rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). "All the good assets are in Africa. Of course it's uncomfortable [doing business in Africa], it's even uncomfortable in South Africa," he said.
Shortly after the interview here, he resigned from London NHS. In a letter to the new Health Secretary Andrew Lansley, Sykes said it made "no sense" for him to continue, because "our visions of healthcare delivery bear so little in common".
